At MIYA Creative Care, we believe that integrating music therapists fully into long-term care facilities can significantly enhance not only the well-being of residents but also the overall culture of the home. Our signature offering, the Talent Show Performance, exemplifies this belief. For our long-term care homes that partner with us for one full day or more per week, we offer a yearly "Got Talent" show, which has become a cherished tradition!
The Origin of the Talent Show
The idea for the Talent Show originated from one of our first partnerships at MCC, where I provided music therapy services for three full days per week at an incredible long-term care home. At this home, I had the opportunity to facilitate individual and group sessions, sit on the palliative care committee and behavioural support committee, create specialty programs including Glee Club, and co-lead music and movement groups with the on-site physiotherapist.
One of the residents on my caseload was an older adult living with a progressed dementia diagnosis. He was having a difficult time with his new transition to the home, was wandering, exit seeking, and was observed to be feeling quite anxious. One of the few things that seemed to help him feel a sense of calm was music. Not only did it provide a sense of calm, but it seemed to provide positive feelings of empowerment and joy. This individual had been a musician his entire life, and the music therapy sessions allowed him to express himself in a familiar and important way.
One day, during our session a nurse walked by and peered in with amazement as he sang, laughed, and engaged. She later shared, ‘I’ve never seen him so engaged. And who knew he could sing so beautifully?’
This moment made me realize the incredible potential for staff to see residents in a new light through their musical expressions. This inspired the first Talent Show, which was a resounding success. With both resident, staff, and family involvement, I knew this would become a signature part of MIYA Creative Care’s offerings. Today, our team of over 20 music therapists continues this tradition in long-term care homes across Ontario.
What is the MCC Signature Talent Show?
Our Talent Show in partnered long-term care homes is a yearly event where residents, staff, and family members are invited to participate and celebrate together. Our music therapists carefully select residents from their caseload who can benefit from performing and involve staff members in the performances. The event often includes groups, duets, and a show from our Glee Club and Bell Choir programs, ensuring a diverse and engaging showcase.
Benefits of the Talent Show
1. Building Community: The Talent Show brings the entire home together, creating an equilibrium between staff, residents, family members, and the management team. By including not only residents but also staff and families in the show, we foster a sense of unity and shared joy. The laughter and fun experienced during these events help build stronger connections and create a supportive community atmosphere.
2. Breaking Down Stigma: One of the most powerful aspects of the Talent Show is its ability to break down the stigma associated with dementia, disabilities, and other challenges faced by residents in long-term care. Staff and family members are often blown away by the musical talents of the residents, seeing them in a new light. For example, I worked with a woman who, due to the progression of her dementia diagnosis, had declining verbal communication abilities. However, at the yearly Talent Show, she chose to perform the entire song "The Sound of Silence" by Simon and Garfunkel by memory, astonishing everyone present. These moments help to shift perceptions of what individuals living with dementia are capable of and highlight the abilities, humanity, and potential of residents.
3. Empowering Residents: For the residents who participate, the Talent Show provides a meaningful goal to work towards, creating a sense of purpose and accomplishment. In long-term care, where daily life can sometimes feel monotonous, having something to look forward to and prepare for is incredibly important. The process of rehearsing and performing can be very empowering, giving residents a chance to express themselves and gain confidence.
The Importance of Professional Facilitation
Our music therapists play a crucial role in ensuring the success and safety of the Talent Show. With their expertise, they can select residents who will benefit from performing and provide the necessary emotional support throughout the process. Not every resident on the music therapy caseload will benefit from participation, and our therapists are skilled in making these determinations to ensure the best outcomes for everyone involved.
